Gut Microbiota Stability and Resilience

22/11/2021

What are the consequences when the composition and activity of the gut microbiota is disturbed?

The human gut microbiome is a complex ecosystem within our gastro-intestinal tract, encompassing thousands of microbial species, the gut microbiota,  which coevolved with us and is known to play important roles in not only gastro- intestinal –  but also systemic health and disease.

The composition and activity of the gut microbiota can, however, be disrupted by perturbations, for example, induced by antibiotic use.

What are the consequences when the composition and activity of the gut microbiota is disturbed? And can this affect the onset or chronicity of gastro-intestinal disorders and recurrent infections?

Arjen Nauta addresses these questions in this video, while also explaining the resilience phenomenon—the gut microbiota’s ability to restore its equilibrium after a disturbance.
